Crooked House’s youth arts project – Kildare Youth Theatre – present two brand new plays as part of the National Theatre (UK) Connections project, especially for teenagers by two of Britains most inventive new writers.
If you don’t know about the great work that is been by Peter Hussey and his crew, you should really check them out.
Based in Newbridge, Kildare Youth Theatre is the county’s oldest youth theatre, catering for young people aged 14 to 25. There are currently 120 young people involved each week in different projects, and an additional 200 become involved occasionally and during holidays. Programmes range from drama workshops and rehearsals to creating new plays based on the young peoples experiences and research.
Our team as been photographing the creative work directed by Peter and preformed by the young people since our first shoot in May 2013. The play was William Shakespeare’s, Macbeth. This was preformed in The Moat Theatre, Naas. To check out some of these images and to see what else these guys got up to in 2013 have a scroll through this page, we have had the pleasure of working with them on a few of these.
Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge, Tues 11th and Wed 12th March, The Pictureboots Team had the pleasure of been present for both nights. It was such a great show, we had to go back the second night with out the camera just to take it all in again!
Same by Deborah Bruce is set in a nursing home for the elderly. It has a set of characters in their 80s and some in their mid-teens. It looks at the similarities between the two groups and how, ultimately, we are all the same. It also deals with family, death and loss in a touching, real and humorous way.
Hearts by Luke Norris is about football, set in the changing rooms of a local, unimpressive, football team. It explores the tensions and rivalries of the team, and of the girls who support them. The play is about perseverance, struggle and hope, a sharply observed comedy appealing to anyone who has ever struggled to get a football team off the ground.
Peter Hussey directs the plays, which feature a cast of 22 and a crew of 10 young people from all over Kildare. Some of the group are very experienced, having been in several plays over the last three years; while for others this marks their stage debut.
Over the past year, we have have been the fly on the wall as we documented these creative expressionists with our cameras. The personal development and skills we have witnessed among this group, not to mention the friendship and sheer camaraderie with everyone, is an absolute credit to everyone involved.
We hope you enjoy looking back at these memories for years to come!
